Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
